Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast. Mix these dry ingredients well. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of warm milk, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Gradually add this wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Malasadas
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Then, divide it into small pieces, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a floured baking sheet. Cover them again and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
Heat the Oil
- In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat. You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of dough into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, you’re good to go!
Fry the Malasadas
- Carefully place a few dough balls into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown.
Drain and Dust
- Once golden, remove the malasadas from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While they are still warm, roll them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon for that classic sweet touch.
Serve and Enjoy
- Your malasada Hawaii is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve them warm, perhaps with a side of fresh fruit or whipped cream for an extra treat.
