Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Forms the base of the dough.
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar Sweetens and helps create a golden crust.
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast Crucial for leavening.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Whole milk Adds richness and moisture.
  • 1 large Egg Provides protein and binds ingredients.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Enhances sweetness and aroma.
Frying Ingredients
  • 2 inches Vegetable oil For frying.
  • 1/4 cup Cinnamon sugar For dusting.
Gluten-free option
  • 1 cup Gluten-free flour blend For a gluten-free alternative.

Equipment

  • 1 Large mixing bowl For mixing dough.
  • 1 Floured surface For kneading dough.
  • 1 deep frying pan For frying malasadas.
  • 1 Paper towels For draining excess oil.

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast. Mix these dry ingredients well. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of warm milk, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Gradually add this wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
  1. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise
  1. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Malasadas
  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Then, divide it into small pieces, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a floured baking sheet. Cover them again and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
Heat the Oil
  1. In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat. You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of dough into it; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, you’re good to go!
Fry the Malasadas
  1. Carefully place a few dough balls into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown.
Drain and Dust
  1. Once golden, remove the malasadas from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While they are still warm, roll them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon for that classic sweet touch.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Your malasada Hawaii is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve them warm, perhaps with a side of fresh fruit or whipped cream for an extra treat.
