Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 packet of instant yeast, and a pinch of salt. Mix these dry ingredients well. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of warm milk, 1/4 cup of melted butter, and 1 large egg. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
  1. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Let it Rise
  1. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Malasadas
  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the dough into squares or circles.
Heat the Oil
  1. In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the Malasadas
  1. Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, frying for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Coat with Sugar
  1. While the malasadas are still warm, roll them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Your homemade malasadas are now ready to be enjoyed! Serve them warm.
